Synopsis: One family’s struggle to be reunited but blocked by borders, lack of opportunity, and fear that their love has changed through the years.
One-sentence takeaway: Beautiful prose shares a story we need to keep hearing everyday until we find a way to keep families together; immigrate safely and be free of discrimination while living here.
Overall storytelling/structure: Story is being told by one of the family members but jumps around to each person’s experience. Layered with the family’s history and Colombian folklore.
Writing style/prose: smooth with a little grit, overall beautiful.
Characters: sucked in from the start as Talia ties up a nun on the first paged the book to escape back home.
Mood: not a light read as it obviously deals with some larger issues (including sexual assault), however (spoiler alert) there is a happy ending.
